The New Primary Maths Curriculum – A Guide for Parents

Ireland has a new maths curriculum for all primary schools. It replaces the one from 1999 and is designed to help children build a deeper understanding of maths, not just memorise answers.

What’s different?

Children will learn by exploring, playing, and solving real-life problems.

The focus is on understanding and explaining maths, not only getting the right answer.

Teachers can use more flexible ways to teach, like games, hands-on materials, and discussions.

Mistakes are seen as part of learning. Children are encouraged to share their thinking.

New topics include financial skills, spatial reasoning, and problem-solving.

What does this mean for your child?

Maths lessons may look more playful and creative.

Children will spend more time explaining their ideas and less time on drills.

You may hear new methods that are different from how you learned maths.

The goal is for children to understand maths deeply and use it with confidence.

This new approach is designed to help every child enjoy maths, see its value in everyday life, and

grow in confidence.
